About
Sculptures

My work has often had a sculptural 3-dimensional element to it, and that includes some of my paintings which have a low relief factor.  For this part of the website, I’ve focused on images which are somewhat easier to read as 3-dimensional and sculptural.

I do like the idea of hanging sculptures on or near walls.  As I work quite a lot with glass, I’ve developed a hybrid collage/blown glass technique, where the resultant sculptures can hang.  These ‘collage’ pieces stick to the principle of ‘cut and paste’.  Some of the blown glass pieces we make are just not quite right, but may still have little abstract elements within them that I like.  So, I cut these parts out with a diamond saw, and then with other diamond grinding equipment, shape them into something interesting.  These forms are usually either rectangular or oblique.

In true collage methodology I can glue or bond these little abstractions together with glass specific adhesives, which once composed into a new whole form are also bonded to a polished aluminium armature which can reflect light back through the glass, enlivening the sculpture.

These works are entirely abstract but the titles may refer to the colours of the piece and endangered bird species – but in the form of an anagram, or maybe some recent music I’d been listening to, or a birdwatching experience.

Another material I like to work with is the timber slab.  While there have been a few entirely abstract images, I’ve found that cutting in images of birds to be satisfying…’putting the birds back in the trees’.  Bowerbird species have informed a number of these works.
