The use of photography within Noel’s oeuvre has occurred in parallel to the development of his paintings. Frequent experimentation with both photographic images and the technology involved has led to a broad visual language that can be narrative one moment and abstract the next. Ultimately the artworks involving photographics are somewhat sculptural, exploring similar themes to the paintings and glass, with some works even referring to and including painting and glass.
The images shown here were created as a collaborative project with ex-photographer Stuart Owen Fox. Stuart ditched his photographic equipment and took up the scanner a few years ago. For this collaboration, I’d create the blown glass objects that Stuart would then scan. The fish are dead tropical fish which Stuart has also scanned. The final designs are generally Stuart’s ideas. These digital files are up to 2 gigabytes in scale and can therefore be utilised as anything from a postage stamp to a wall mural. Dupont are using some of our images as samples for their architectural glass Digiglass.
