SCULPTURE IN THE PADDOCK
NOVEMBER 18 & 19, 2011
Sculpture in the Paddock was an original concept by curator Dev Lengjel in conjunction with Karen Ryan from Barebones Art Space in Banglow. Eight invited artists were each matched with a local farmer with a view for a themed work to be exhibited at the Annual Agricultural Show held in Bangalow, NSW, Australia. The Bangalow Show attracts a large number of visitors from near and far.
Noel was matched with Show Bird Poultry Breeders, Hector & Glenda McKenzie which resulted in an enjoyable series of meetings.
Noel said of the experience. "It has been inspirational getting to know Hector & Glenda who have a wealth of information about Show Birds, as well as years of experience working with the 'chook psyche'! It's been fun, and I thank them for their time with me".
Noel's installation (made from mixed media) was placed near the Bird Display Shed. Pictured below is a snapshot from his contribution.

recycled cardboard coffin lid - 191cm W x 59cm H x 3cm D
acrylic paint, hand pulled glass canes, bottle caps, photos, epoxy resin
detail below with Kangaroo Island Emu, and the Red Colobus Monkey:

Noel writes: "The Extinction Stars is not only about death, but the complete elimination of species.
The species represented on this coffin lid have all gone, become extinct, except one - the Blue Spix Macaw, which has been on the verge of extinction, and is slowly making a recovery in captivity.
In the 1600's, Robert Fludd, a doctor, hermetic philospher, and artist, conceived and illustrated the esoteric idea that all lilving things on earth were represented by stars in the sky. For this piece, I've modified this idea to suggest that when a living entity passes, it becomes a star."
