artsCAPE Biennial

June 26 - July 11, 2010
Byron Bay, Australia

The ArtsCAPE National Sculpture Exhibition was centred around an environmental theme.  This installation titled "The Ways of Survival" is partially ephemeral, and   explores the possibilities of how bowerbirds may evolve in the future.

"Will bowebirds - architects, sculptors and painters  in their own right - have the opportunity to continue to evolve?"

"The Ways of Survival"  is a two and three dimensional illustration depicting a future pair of unnamed bowerbirds and the male's maypole bower, as may appear in an ornithological text where successful sexual selection depends on who's the best artist."

Maypole ht: 4.5 metre; Male: 2.4 mt H; Female : 2.4mt W
- made from hand carved & treated wood, metal armatures, bamboo, privet, tree fern, pine needles, flowers, electrical casings from redundant appliances

The new blown glass works showing at both SOFA and at Jane Sauer Gallery continue to investigate an aesthetic associated with birds species, not only parrots but also birds of paradise.

Both of these families of birds include species with extreme plumage designs that inspire the colour sequences in the glass.  I've also looked at the indigenous names given to some of these rare species, along with the locations where they may be found.

As much of my work has a conservationist logic associated with it, I've approached these works as a form of primitive 'increase' sculpture. Not only are the birds often under threat, but also the indigenous descriptive names and the very landscape where they occur.

ORNITHOLOGY ABSTRACTED
 April 23 - May 17, 2010
solo exhibition

Jane Sauer Gallery - Santa Fe NM, USA

The logic behind the appearance of the work has to do with my interests in natural history art and artists, primitive art, birds, conservation, bio-diversity and the range of related subjects, approached from the perspective of an abstractionist.
This approach is also shown in  the work which will be exhibited  at SOFA New York.  (please refer above for futher detail)
